Codenomicon Board Member Appointed US Chief of Cybersecurity

President Obama calls Howard Schmidt back to the White House

OULU, FINLAND and CUPERTINO, CA - December 23rd, 2009 - Codenomicon board member Howard A. Schmidt was appointed the White House Cybersecurity Coordinator yesterday by President Barack Obama. This appointment is the latest move in a series of measures taken by the White House to further cybersecurity, a theme which has taken on new urgency this year in the face of a growing range of cyberattacks and reports of vulnerabilities in business and military computing systems. In his Cyberspace Policy Review, President Obama declared cybersecurity as a national priority, which is vital to the American economy and the security of the nation.

In his new post Mr. Schmidt will be in charge of, e.g., developing a cybersecurity strategy and promoting research and development, a post he is well qualified for. Mr. Schmidt is the President and CEO of the Information Security Forum, an independent and nonprofit information security organization focused on cyber risk and research. He has served as chief information security officer at eBay and chief security officer at Microsoft, and worked in federal and local law enforcement and in the Department of Defence. In the Bush administration, he was the vice chairman of the president's Critical Infrastructure Protection Board and a special adviser for cyberspace security.

Codenomicon is proud to have a distinguished expert like Mr. Schmidt on its company board. Schmidt joined the Codenomicon board in December 2007. But he already became acquainted with the company in 2000, when the Oulu University Secure Programming Group (OUSPG), the university research group from which Codenomicon was spun off, reported its findings on ASN.1 vulnerabilities and their effects on SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) implementations. Mr. Schmidt became interested with the security company, which not only strives to ensure security today, but also to shape the cyber security of tomorrow.
